With all of the positive effects of stem cells in medical treatments, some would assume that the same benefits would exist for their use in aesthetic procedures. However, their effectiveness in plastic surgery remains undetermined, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. While their capabilities seem promising, substantial research still needs to be performed to evaluate their use.

Stem cells in plastic surgery As one of the latest procedures to include stem cells, the stem cell facelift involves harvesting fat from a person's stomach or thighs through liposuction, according to The New York Times. From there, it's injected in certain areas of the face that need plumping. The procedure can help hollow brows and sunken cheek bones appear fuller and more youthful.

Since fat already includes a large number of stem cells, a treatment that's branded with the term could lead patients to believe it's a more powerful, effective approach to a standard fat grafting procedure. However, there is no published research that supports the effectiveness of a stem cell treatment.

Key takeaways Stem cells that exist in fat have been found to have healing capabilities in individuals with spinal cord injuries and heart conditions, and research that shows whether they can actually provide effective results in plastic surgery is currently underway, according to The New York Times. Peter Rubin, MD, a director of the Adipose Stem Cell Center at the University of Pittsburgh, told the source about an upcoming study involving the use of stem cells on wounded soldiers with facial deformities. Once the study is concluded, scientists will have a better understanding of their effectiveness in aesthetic procedures.

After making the decision to undergo a stem cell treatment, it's best to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon who can further discuss the effectiveness of your desired procedure. As it is a relatively new method, it's important to find a skilled professional who can explain the most recent research surrounding a specific treatment.
